Nick Rawlinson joined AMC in 1997, after working for 10 years as a research scientist for CSIRO. Nick spent 10 years in the Pacific Islands working closely with staff of the Fisheries Departments in Solomon Islands, Kiribati and Fiji as well as spending extensive periods in Indonesia. Most of his work in these countries was related to the baitfisheries associated with the commercial pole-and-line fisheries for tuna. Nick was heavily involved in the design and testing of Bycatch Reduction Devices (BRDs, which are currently used in the Northern Prawn Fishery (NPF), in northern Australia. In addition, he is currently working collaboratively on a project to quantify effective fishing effort in the NPF. Nick teaches Fisheries and the Community, Information Processing and Data Analysis, Computing and Research/Design Methods in the undergraduate degree programs. He also lectures in the Graduate School of Marine Resource Management (MBA) Program.
Research Interests:
- Collection of data required for fisheries management
- Selectivity of fishing gears
- Quantification of fishing effort
- Catching trout
