Conditions of employment for staff at AMC are regulated by federal industrial agreements. Further information about employment conditions can be found on the Industrial Awards & Agreements page.
All Australian Maritime College positions are filled on the basis of merit. A merit selection process aims to select the best candidate for a position, by addressing the relevant claims of applicants against the selection criteria. If you require further information about the position after reading the duty statement and selection criteria you should get in touch with the contact officer nominated in the advertisement. The contact officer works in the area of the vacancy and will be able to advise you on the technical aspects of the position and the work area.
Before you commence writing your application you should carefully read the duty statement and selection criteria to ensure that you meet the position requirements and to ensure you have a good understanding of the role.
Applications should be typed and should contain an Application Form (PDF Document, 36k), a Curriculum Vitae (CV) containing employment history and a statement addressing your claims against each of the selection criteria. Addressing the selection criteria is an important part of your application and the information you provide in your application will be used as a basis for short listing for further consideration in the selection process. The onus is on applicants to demonstrate their claims and only the applicant?s who best demonstrate their claims will be considered further.
When addressing the selection criteria you should provide an outline of your claims for the position in respect of each criterion. You should outline relevant skills and experience and explain the relevance of your abilities, experience, qualifications and personal qualities. In preparing this information you should concentrate on the quality not the quantity of the information, highlighting the achievements, which you believe will best demonstrate your claims against each criterion. It is not sufficient to simply claim that you do meet the selection criteria.
On your CV you should include your name, address, preferred title, contact telephone number/email address, educational qualifications, training and previous work experience. You should list your work experience in reverse chronological order, this section does not need to be lengthy but it should provide a full picture of your employment history. Names and contact details of referees should be provided in your CV and a copy of relevant qualifications should also be included. To assist with timely processing please clip (not staple) your application, binding or presentation folders should not be used.
Applications should be forwarded by the advertised closing date to the Manager, Human Resources (Applications), PO Box 986 Launceston, TAS 7250. Electronic applications are welcome and can be emailed to Job.Apps@corp.amc.edu.au.
If you cannot submit your application by the closing date, you must call the contact officer to see if a late application will be accepted and to determine an alternative time for submission. You will receive written acknowledgement of your application.
If you have any queries regarding requirements or would like more information on our selection processes please contact Kelli Roach on (03) 6335 4715.
The Australian Maritime College uses Behaviour Description Interviewing as its preferred recruitment/ selection tool. The major principle behind Behaviour Description Interviewing (BDI) is that behaviour exhibited in one set of circumstances is the best indicator of future behaviour in a similar set of circumstances.
For example, when recruiting an academic who will be required to have a high percentage of teaching in their workload, you would collect information from similar past experiences. Behavioural information will not always come from experiences identical to those of the target position; the interviewer must seek out comparable experiences.
Candidates being interviewed for a position at the Australian Maritime College will be asked a series of questions against a pre-determined set of Dimensions. These Dimensions are listed in the Selection Criteria, which is made available to all applicants. Examples of Dimensions include (but are not limited to): Tenacity, Conceptual Thinking, Initiative, Self Control, etc.
Applicants will be asked to give SPECIFIC examples when answering the questions. Speaking hypothetically or generally is not sufficient. Interviewers are looking for specific examples that clearly outline the circumstance, the action taken and the end result. The best homework before attending a Behaviour Description Interview is to sit down with the Selection Criteria and think of specific examples from work experience that you are particularly proud of or are strong examples of those Dimensions listed.
You may be required to attend two interviews on the same day. This allows two panels (of at-least two people) to ask different questions against the same Dimensions. These panels then can compare data and reach an objective consensus score. Otherwise you may be attending the one interview with a panel of at-least three people.
BDI is not meant to be an intimidating process; it is ensuring that both the applicant and AMC are in the best position to make an informed and objective decision. Please feel free as you progress through the interview process to ask questions.
Candidates, further to the interviewing process, may be required to complete
a technical test. The technical test is designed to measure those technical
skills relevant to the position. Some examples of technical tests include,
but are not limited to:
Typing test, checking for speed and accuracy.
Presentation on a nominated topic, checking for topic familiarisation and
presentation skills.
Particular task with a specific piece of equipment, checking for familiarisation,
knowledge of best safety practice and efficient and timely task completion.
Relocation will be in accordance with AMC policy unless otherwise agreed between the parties.
