Courses

Do you like science and are you inspired to work within the fields of Aquaculture, Marine Conservation, Fisheries Management or Aquatic Animal Health? Do you want to make a real difference to the conservation and sustainability of marine life and environments?

Graduates of the AMC’s National Centre for Marine Conservation & Resource Sustainability have the capabilities to make that difference.  They have the skills and knowledge to recognise when and where there is a problem, why the problem has occurred and most importantly to come up with possible solutions.  Their work enhances many aspects of our lives from the availability and quality of seafoods to our continued enjoyment of seaside recreational facilities and activities.

Marine Environment students at AMC have access to a range of facilities including the Aquaculture Centre and AMC’s ‘Bluefin’.  Students study in a choice of three ‘majors’: Aquaculture, Marine Conservation, or Fisheries Management.

At undergraduate level AMC offers a two year Associate Degree in Aquaculture and a three year Bachelor of Applied Science (Marine Environment).  Post graduate courses include Graduate Certificate / Diploma / Masters in Applied Science (Marine Environment) plus research degrees at Masters and PhD levels. Honours courses are available to supplement your learning at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Associate Degree in Aquaculture

The Associate Degree in Aquaculture has been specifically designed to offer student education and training in aquaculture, and to prepare students for the workplace. This is achieved via a 2 year, 16 unit undergraduate degree with a mix of vocational, scientific and technological activity, and workplace experience.

Bachelor of Applied Science (Marine Environment)

This is a vibrant and contemporary 3 year, 24 unit undergraduate degree program addressing national and international issues in the Marine Environment.  Major study is available in the areas of Aquaculture, Fisheries Management and Marine Conservation. This course prepares students for application and translation of science into industry practice, management and policy by providing a generic structure that facilitates exposure to the underpinning aspects of the natural and social sciences, management and policy and law while providing specialisations in the applied disciplines through majors in Fisheries Management, Aquaculture and Marine Conservation. Graduates will be well suited to careers in the area of marine environmental management, policy and regulation in industry, non-governmental organisations and all levels of government.

Bachelor of Applied Science (Marine Environment) with Honours

The BAppSci (ME) Honours is a 1 year (2 semester) degree that builds onthe base skill and knowledge developed in a Bachelors degree. The Honours course provides an experience in independant, research-based study through which problem-solvingskills are further honed. A defined research project with 1 or more National Centre staff is completed resulting in a thesis.  A research project honours year can be undertaken on successful completion of the Bachelor Degree with a credit average or above. Candidates would normally be expected to obtain at least a credit average in the last three semesters of undergraduate studies.

Graduate Certificate & Graduate Diploma of Applied Science (Marine Environment)

The GradCert (ME) and GradDip (ME) provide broadening specialist skills and professional development in one of the three degree major disciplines.  A key focus of these courses is development of students’ capacity to deliver increased value in the workplace through increased skill level and specialised knowledge.  The degrees comprise four and eight units respectively selected from one of the three major disciplines: Aquaculture, Fisheries Management and Marine Conservation.

Master of Applied Science (Marine Environment) & Master of Applied Science (Marine Environment) with Honours

The Masters program builds on the base skill and knowledge built across the 8 units completed to achieve the award of Graduate Diploma of Applied Science (ME).  The Masters course exposes students to independent, research-based study through which research and problem-solving skills are developed.  A defined research project under the supervision of one or more National Centre staff is completed across either a 1 semester or 2 semester (Honours) duration.

Research Degrees – Masters and PhD

Boasting a team of research academics with world class credentials, the NCMCRS has the resources to mix and match broad and complementary capabilities, and to deliver students world class multi-disciplinary research training, providing choice and allowing graduates to occupy a unique niche. With a ‘translational’ research philosophy and a strong applied science focus, training for research students takes advantage of established links with industry and government stakeholders.  The National Centre’s students are actively engaged with external partners providing development of research translation skills not offered in many traditional research training programs.
