Bridge competition still not pasta use by date
Fifteen teams and countless packets of pasta has seen this year’s Pasta Bridge Competition at AMC end in a new record.
Finishing in its traditional fashion - with a Friday night weigh-in at the Seafarers’ Bar – this year’s winning team eclipsed the previous record for a bridge made of pasta. Simple rules of the maritime engineering competition state no more than 1kg of dried pasta can be used to construct a bridge with a span no greater than 1m.
This year’s winners smashed last year’s record of 73.4kg with an astounding weight-bearing effort of 134kg. While 2009 teams averaged 25kg, 2010’s field almost doubled the effort, averaging 46kg per team, proving once and for all that home brand pasta is good for something other than keeping university students alive once they’ve run out of two-minute noodles!
