AMC students on a City Mission

AMC students work on "Star House" for City Mission

Nine students from AMC Search's Pacific Patrol Boat Program will present an outdoor deck and fence they built as part of their course to the City Mission on Tuesday 21 April.

"As part of their assessment process the students have to manage a community project. They worked with City Mission to expand and improve an accommodation facility for young people who need a fresh start after detention or are "at risk" of getting into trouble without the support of family, said AMC Search CEO Mr John Foster.

Each year AMC Search runs a General Management Course in Launceston as part of the Pacific Patrol Boat Program for Defence.

A major part of the assessment for the General Management Course revolves around the completion of a community-based project to which AMC Search donates $2,000. Extra funds are raised by the students if they are required.

The project is used to help assess skills like project management (including writing project specifications, scheduling, budgeting, purchasing, and contract extensions) teamwork, leadership, and communication.

"In the past we have completed projects for disadvantaged schools in the area, however earlier this year I contacted the City Mission and asked if they had any projects they would like us to complete for them," said AMC Search course leader Russell MacAndrew.

"They chose a recently obtained property which they will use as a shelter for these young people.  This house has been renovated and a veranda off the back of the house was required as well as a side fence built."

The students come from many different countries in the Pacific including Tonga, Samoa, PNG, Solomon Islands and the Cook Islands.

The nine course participants worked on the project (building the veranda and repairing the side fence) at least one day every week for six weeks from 7th March.

"This is a community based project that may help those less fortunate than us with a new start in life," said Mr MacAndrew.

Mrs Michele Ryan, the Client Services Manger for the Launceston City Mission said, "The partnership between City Mission and AMC Search to build both an outdoor deck and fence has built a sense of camaraderie and purpose as we work together with a common goal.

"We are so thankful that the completion of this project will mean a pleasant outdoor living environment for the residents to enjoy as they continue to work on their fresh start in life.  The students have been such a wonderful team of positive men who have helped City Mission to yet again make a positive difference in our community."
