Some notes on 2nd assignment

HI all, I am sure that you are now busy with your 2nd assignment. Module 5 in your Study Guide and Lectures Notes posted on this forum about this module will be of great help to you - so, read them carefully. How to deploy your literature review will depend on, and of course, be consistent to your research question(s). For instance, if the research question is "what are critical factors for the successful implementation of the ISPS Code in the port ABC?", then clearly your literature review is no longer about brief explanation of what the ISPS Code is about or something like that, but about the factors which are critical to the implementation of the Code, as mentioned and studied somewhere in the literature. As you are aware from the Study Guide and lecture notes, the followings must be cautious upon when conducting and writing literature review: - Do not present your review author by author, or study by study, or findings of this study then findings of that study. Do present the review by common themes or findings. Study the examples of good and bad literature review provided in your Study Guide. YOu will find that, in the example of good literature review, the author presented his review following 3 main themes. - At the end of your literature review, there MUST be a section summarising your review and specifing shortcomings/deficiencies in the literature. This is because, if there is no shortcoming and the research question is well covered in the literature already, then there is no need to conduct your project at hand. In other words, the need for your research is not justified. The shortcmonings found in the literature can be in terms of content (e.g. findings), or in terms of methodology (e.g. suitability), or both. Please bear in mind that you are about to conduct a literature review for a research project that you will be proposing (in the 3rd assignment), and go on to actually conduct it (e.g. doing sampling, collecting data, analysing data, etc.) in teh second semester. I hope the above are of some help. SHould you have any query, post a question onto the forum or contact me by phone or email. Good luck for your 2nd assignment, and I look forward to reading and marking good pieces of literature review. Cheers Vinh Thai
