Feedback - Assignment 1 - Content

The content in relation to addressing the question should be the most important part of the marking. However, sometimes other factors get in the way, for example, plagiarism and referencing, poor English expression resulting in the content not being understood - these issues and others are dealt with in other postings.

One issue that must be accepted by all of us is that it is impossible to comprehensively and completely answer the question, if you can then either the word count has been exceeded or I have not written the question properly. When lecturers construct a question we have an idea of how many words are required for a full answer, we then put in place a smaller word count. Hmmm, doesn't seem fair does it! However, what we are trying to do is force you to become succinct and be able to prioritise the issues that will eventually be included. So in other words, you are making a conscious decision about only including the most important issues that will fit in the word count - thus the importance of using an essay plan.

QUESTION 1

This question was looking for an understanding of the various international staffing approaches.  Either the ethnocentric or geocentric approaches were acceptable depending on the assumptions made from the case study.  I was more interested in the logic and discussion used based on the information provided and then whether you thought this or another approach was more appropriate.  In other words, it was the justification for the answers that was important, and thus the referencing to support the discussion.

QUESTION 2

Here the focus was on WHY selection is more complex, not on WHAT are the selection criteria – there is a difference.  Those who provided a list of criteria did not gain many marks.  Instead of describing each criteria, the discussion should have been on applying the criteria to show why selecting expats is more difficult than selecting domestic employees
