Feedback - Assignment 1 - spelling, grammar and so on

Hi HRMers

Another instalment about Assignment 1, a posting on the content will be posted in the next couple of days.

INCLUSIVE LANGUAGE

In these enlightened days, it is no longer acceptable in business to use gender specific language in general discussion. Therefore the use words such as him and he for example need to be removed when referring to both males and females. You may have noticed it is AMC's policy to use inclusive language - this is written on the page prior to the table of contents for the readings.

 **SPELLING AND GRAMMAR

There are a number of assignments that do not appear to have been proofread. As noted in the tips for Assignment 1, I would rather you find the errors and fix them than me, because then your result is affected. After spell/grammar checking, ask your partner or friend to proofread the assignment, it is not necessary for them to understand the subject. Some common errors were the differences of uses of there/their, were/where, to/too/two, witch/which, lose/loose.

CAPITALS

Capital letters are being used for many words, for example some students were writing "Human Resource Management" instead of "human resource management". Capital letters are reserved for:

- Proper nouns - names

- The beginning of a sentence

- Acronyms

CONJUNCTIONS

Some of you may notice where I have crossed out words such as "But", "Because" or "And". These words are known as conjunctions, that is they join a couple of thoughts together. In formal writing, such as academic assignements, conjunctions should not be used to begin sentences.

AMPERSANDS

Ampersands (&) are not used during a sentence. The only time they are acceptable in an acedemic assignment is either in the list of references between authors or intext between authors but only when in brackets. For example (Smith & Jones 2003) is acceptable; but the following is not acceptable: "Smith & Jones (2003) state that ..." instead it must be shown "Smith and Jones (2003) state that ..."

APOSTROPHES

The incorrect use of apostophes was a common error. Please read up about this. Another common error is the use of it's. "it's" is an abbreviation for "it is". "it's does not refer to possession. Yes I know, the English language can be a real pain.

PRESENTATION

Despite the warnings in the "Additional information on the assessment" section of the subject information booklet, some students decided not to provide an abstract, table of contents, introduction or conclusion. Then there were others who provided one of the above for each question. PLEASE follow the format of Steve's Automotive which is provided to make lfe easy for you.

Regardless of whether there is one or three questions, the abstract, intro and conclusion discuss all the questions. A posting on writing abstracts has already been provided. Just so you know, Steve's Authomotive addresses four questions. As can also be seen in Steve's Automotive, there are no blank areas from the introduction to the conclusion. We are using an assignment style not a report style that places each major heading on a new page. Unless there are specific instructions to the contrary from the lecturer, assignments must be presented the same way as Steve's Automotive - if unsure, check with the lecturer.

Cheers

Stephen
