Experts gather to increase environmental awareness

A team of experts in marine ecosystems and sustainable shipping will gather at the Australian Maritime College in Launceston this month to deliver a specialised marine environment awareness course.

The course aims to increase environmental awareness and develop approaches for environmentally sustainable shipping in the Australian maritime industry. Sponsored by BP and the Australian Shipowners Association, the course is open to all employees of companies involved in shipping and maritime enterprises including seafarers and all shore-based staff.

Through presentations and workshops, course attendees will examine marine ecology and toxicology, atmospheric emissions, marine waste and litter, marine pests, sustainable shipping and the importance of image and acceptance in society.

Speakers will include Director of the National Centre for Marine Conservation and Resource Sustainability Professor Chad Hewitt, Dayanthi Nugegoda, from RMIT, Brett Whiteoak, Suzie Bailey and Katharine Palmer, from BP, and Angela Gillham, from ASA.

The course will be held at the AMC on July 16-17.
