MLM Toolbox for Students - Construction of Assignments

Content

Students should ensure that their answer demonstrates an understanding of the issue/problem and should check that the question has been answered. Descriptive material unrelated to the question will not be rewarded. Answers should be coherent and follow a logical line of discussion or argument.

Expression

Students are expected to have a good command of the English language, both oral and written. Students who are unable to express themselves clearly and concisely will have difficulty in communicating their ideas and arguments. Poor expression must invariably influence the marks awarded. Students need to note that expression in the first person is unacceptable; use for example "the manager implements" instead of "I implement".

Assignment presentation

Students should be aware that technical and presentation deficiencies can inhibit understanding and make it difficult for assessors to award marks for analyses and discussions. If text cannot be readily understood because of poor presentation or technical deficiencies, that text is unlikely to be well rewarded. Marks that might otherwise be awarded for an assignment may be deducted specifically for poor assignment presentation, poor visual organization and for poor spelling, punctuation and sentence structure. Refer to the Presentation and style guide.

References

In your assessment items, your reading enhances the discussions and arguments you develop. This means that your reading needs to have sufficient depth and quality, and extend beyond the prescribed text(s). This is then supported with sound reasoning and references to your reading, relevant research and/or theory. Failure to read widely and cite references, where appropriate, seriously diminishes the quality of work. The Department follows the Harvard System of Referencing. For application of the Harvard System of referencing, refer to the Referencing requirements for assessments document.
