MLM Toolbox for Students - New Students Introduction

Welcome to the Department of Maritime & Logistics Management (MLM) Toolbox. This Toolbox is a collection of resources which provide advice and information on topics that will facilitate your progress through your course of study.

Please note that if you are viewing the cd version of the toolbox, it may not always contain the latest information. For the latest updates, refer to the toolbox on the MLM home page on the AMC website:

The Assessments menu provides details on how to write, present and submit assessment items. If you are new to academic writing, we recommend that you go through the topics contained in the sub-menu Writing for Assessments.

Your assessment items should be presented in the appropriate style. Refer to the sub-menu Presentation of assessment items for guidance. A sample assignment is provided as an example.

When writing for assessments, it is important to understand how to correctly refer to the work of others. You should be thoroughly familiar with the referencing requirements as contained under the sub-menu Referencing. Pay particular attention to the examples provided in the referencing requirements for assessments document.

Additionally, it is vital that you avoid plagiarism when writing for assessments. The sub-menu Plagiarism and cheating contains an explanation of academic dishonesty, and how to avoid plagiarism.

In order to ensure that your assessment items are received and marked on time, please refer to the procedures outlined in the sub-menu Submission of assessment items.

The Australian Maritime College has recently integrated with the University of Tasmania. Many items that would normally reside in the section Key Rules and Processes are still being clarified and may not be included in the CD version of the toolbox.

Best wishes for an enjoyable year of study,

Dr Stephen Cahoon
Head, Department of Maritime and Logistics Management
