Complete program from school leaver to Watchkeeper or Master

Shipping companies world wide are supporting young people from the end of school as Deck Cadets. AMC can provide a complete program for Australian and International Deck Cadets. All programs are internationally approved by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), meeting the STCW95 convention and graduates are certified to obtain the Australian Watchkeeper, Chief Mate and Master Unlimited Certificate of Competency.

Career opportunities

Deck Officers who have spent considerable time at sea may be employed in shore-based areas such as marine surveying, port management, stevedoring operations, shipping management, or pilotage and towage.

Entry requirements

  • Satisfactory completion of Year 10 English, Year 12 Maths and Science, or equivalent
  • Students with English as second language need on IELTS score of at least 5.5 or 5 overall
  • AMSA approved Medical requirements and eyesight test
  • Applicants will need to obtain a traineeship/cadetship with a Shipping Company in order to undertake the seagoing components of the program

Course structure

The programs consist of five phases:

         Phase 1: Pre-sea Deck Cadet core navigation, seamanship subjects and safety training (10 weeks at AMC)

         Phase 2: At sea* Task and Guided Study program - Task Book (Training afloat  Adv Dip 9 months - Dip 18 months)

         Phase 3: Deck Watchkeeper education and training including STCW95 short courses (33 weeks at AMC)

         Phase 4: At sea* Task and Guided Study program - Task Book (Training afloat 9 months)

         Phase 5: Chief Mate / Master unlimited education and training  (33 weeks at AMC)

AMC offers two Deck Cadet pathways; the Diploma and the Advanced Diploma.
Companies can choose which path the Cadet will undertake. The Diploma cadetship ends at the Watchkeeper (Deck) Certificate of Competency. The Advanced Diploma ends at the Master Unlimited level of education and training prior to the cadet obtaining the Watchkeeper (Deck) Certificate of Competency.

Phase 1:  Pre-sea training is held at Beauty Point Campus - Tasmania, Australia

Phase 3:  Deckwatchkeeper training is held at  Launceston Campus, Tasmania, Australia

Residential accommodation is available through  Endeavour Hall
