Deck Officer: Cadet Seagoing Training
Certificate in Seagoing Training (Deck)
This distance education course is designed for trainees and deck ratings at sea, who wish to pursue a career as a deck officer. The course will prepare the candidates for the Diploma in Applied Science (Deck Watchkeeper), which is a prerequisite for the Australian Maritime Safety Authority’s (AMSA) oral examination for the issue of a Certificate of Competency as Watchkeeper (Deck).
Career opportunities
Provides the basic nautical knowledge and safety training for commencing a seagoing career with a view to becoming a deck officer in the merchant navy.
Entry requirements
Candidates have to be serving on board ship as Deck Cadet or Rating. Medical and eyesight requirements apply.
Duration
In accord with AMSA’s qualifying sea-service requirements for the Certificate of Competency as Watchkeeper (Deck).
Course structure
The major part has to be undertaken while serving on board a ship. Thus, the certificate is completed by distance education. The modules are as follows:
- Nautical Mathematics and Physics:
Designed in accordance with the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) model course 7.03 and comprised of basic Mathematics and Physics. - Shipboard Training Program I (STP) - Vessel Familiarisation:
The Guided Study and Training Record Book, approved by AMSA and monitored by AMC, has been developed in accordance with Regulation II/1 and the guidelines in Section B-II/1 of the STCW Convention. - Shipboard Training Program II (STP) - Navigation Watchkeeping Understudy:
The Navigation Watchkeeper Understudy consists of watchkeeping tasks and time record book which is mandatory for all trainees aspiring to progress to Deck Watchkeeper Certificate of Competency. It provides evidence of compliance with Regulation II/1-2.3 of STCW convention, relating to mandatory bridge watchkeeping duties as an understudy.
Qualification
Certificate in Seagoing Training (Deck) or Statement of Attainment for individual modules.
Further training
With required sea-time, the student can undertake Diploma course leading to the Certificate of Competency as Watchkeeper (Deck) and thus progress to a senior rank on trading ships.
