Higher Degree by Research Scholarships

AMC makes available a small number of Higher Degree by Research Scholarships to attract candidates of exceptional research potential to AMC's research 'niche' capabilities.

The scholarships include the:

  • Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) and
  • Endeavour International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (Endeavour IPRS) and
  • John Bicknell Research Scholarship.

The selection criteria for these Scholarships is based on academic merit and demonstrated research potential, as evidenced in the applicant's application form (refer: University of Tasmania Graduate Research website).

In addition, AMC offers Research Training Scheme (RTS) places to support Australian and New Zealand research candidates by providing full fee exemption for higher degree by research studies.

The APA, IPRS, John Bicknell and RTS Scholarships are available for AMC's Doctor of Philosophy, Master of Philosophy and Master of Applied Science (Fisheries), and are generally of three years duration full-time (or equivalent part-time) for a student undertaking a Doctor of Philosophy, and two years full-time (or equivalen part-time) for a student undertaking a Master of Philosophy, or Master of Applied Science (Fisheries).

AMC may also make available other Research Student Scholarships as funding becomes available. The benefits and conditions may vary from time to time. Information regarding any additional such scholarships will be made available on the University of Tasmania and AMC's webpage.

Australian Postgraduate Award (APA)

Australian Postgraduate Awards (APA) are provided to support research training in the Australian higher education sector. AMC awards one APA Scholarship each year to one candidate of exceptional research potential undertaking a higher degree by research.

The APA Scholarship provides stipendiary support of approximately approximately $19,500 (tax free) per (calendar) year, relocation allowances (to a maximum of $1,455), and Thesis allowances ($420 - Masters; $840 - Doctorate). The APA recipient will also be provided with a Research Training Scheme (RTS) place which will provide Higher Education Contribution Scheme (HECS) exemption.

Applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or New Zealand applicant; and
  • Be eligible to enroll in an AMC higher degree by research; and
  • Have completed an Application for Candidature (Form A), and provided all attachments stipulated; and
  • Have completed a Bachelor Degree with First Class Honours, or be regarded by AMC as having an equivalent level of academic attainment; and
  • Be applying to undertake a higher degree by research on a full-time basis, on campus at AMC; and
  • Be applying for enrolment in an AMC area of research concentration (ie. areas in which AMC has particular strength, has concentrated its research resources and has attracted external funding).

Applicants are ineligible to apply where they:

  • Hold a higher degree by research at an equivalent level or higher level as the proposed candidature; or
  • Have previously held a Commonwealth Government-funded postgraduate research scholarship, unless it was terminated within six months of the scholarship’s payments commencing; or
  • Are receiving an equivalent award, scholarship or salary or are under obligation to an existing sponsor, to undertake the higher degree by research.

Endeavour International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS)

The Endeavour International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS) seeks to maintain and develop international research linkages and specifically aims to attract high quality international research students to areas of research strength in the Australian higher education sector, and support Australia's research effort. AMC awards an Endeavour IPRS each year to one candidate of exceptional research potential undertaking a higher degree by research.

John Bicknell Research Scholarship

The John Bicknell Research Scholarship was established in recognition of the significant contribution made by Captain John Bicknell to the Australian Maritime College, and College Council. The Scholarship is supported by AMC's commercial subsidiary, AMC Search Ltd., and aims to attract high quality higher degree by research students to areas of AMC research strength.

AMC awards a John Bicknell Research Scholarship each year to one candidate of exceptional research potential undertaking a higher degree by research. The Scholarship provides stipendiary support of approximately $19,500 (tax free) per (calendar) year, relocation allowances (to a maximum of $1,455) and Thesis allowances ($420 - Masters; $840 - Doctorate).

Applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Be eligible to enroll in an AMC higher degree by research; and
  • Have completed an Application for Candidature (Form A), and provided all attachments stipulated; and
  • Be applying to undertake a higher degree by research on a full-time basis, on campus at AMC; and
  • Be applying for enrolment in an AMC area of research concentration (ie. areas in which AMC has particular strength, has concentrated its research resources and has attracted external funding); and
  • Have completed a Bachelor Degree with First Class Honours, or be regarded by AMC as having an equivalent level of academic attainment 1; and
  • Where the applicant is an international candidate:
    • Demonstrate achievement of English language proficiency levels set for international students (ie. provide evidence of an IELTS test result of 6.5); and
    • Meet international student visa requirements as specified by the Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs (DIMIA).

Applicants are ineligible to apply where they:

  • Hold a higher degree by research at an equivalent level or higher level as the proposed candidature; or
  • Have previously held a Commonwealth Government-funded postgraduate research scholarship, or Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) scholarship within the previous two years, unless it was terminated within six months of the scholarship's payments commencing; or
  • Are receiving an equivalent award, scholarship or salary or are under obligation to an existing sponsor, to undertake the higher degree by research.

Domestic Student Fees

Australian and New Zealand students will generally be provided with a Research Training Scheme (RTS) place providing an exemption from domestic student fees for up to two years full time (four years part time) for a Master of Philosophy, or four years full time (eight years part time) for a Doctor of Philosophy.
