The selection criteria for these Scholarships is based on academic merit and demonstrated research potential, as evidenced in the applicant's application form (refer: University of Tasmania Graduate Research website).
In addition, AMC offers Research Training Scheme (RTS) places to support Australian and New Zealand research candidates by providing full fee exemption for higher degree by research studies.
The APA, IPRS, John Bicknell and RTS Scholarships are available for AMC's Doctor of Philosophy, Master of Philosophy and Master of Applied Science (Fisheries), and are generally of three years duration full-time (or equivalent part-time) for a student undertaking a Doctor of Philosophy, and two years full-time (or equivalen part-time) for a student undertaking a Master of Philosophy, or Master of Applied Science (Fisheries).

Australian Postgraduate Awards (APA) are provided to support research training in the Australian higher education sector. AMC awards one APA Scholarship each year to one candidate of exceptional research potential undertaking a higher degree by research.
The APA Scholarship provides stipendiary support of approximately approximately $19,500 (tax free) per (calendar) year, relocation allowances (to a maximum of $1,455), and Thesis allowances ($420 - Masters; $840 - Doctorate). The APA recipient will also be provided with a Research Training Scheme (RTS) place which will provide Higher Education Contribution Scheme (HECS) exemption.

The Endeavour International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS) seeks to maintain and develop international research linkages and specifically aims to attract high quality international research students to areas of research strength in the Australian higher education sector, and support Australia's research effort. AMC awards an Endeavour IPRS each year to one candidate of exceptional research potential undertaking a higher degree by research.
The John Bicknell Research Scholarship was established in recognition of the significant contribution made by Captain John Bicknell to the Australian Maritime College, and College Council. The Scholarship is supported by AMC's commercial subsidiary, AMC Search Ltd., and aims to attract high quality higher degree by research students to areas of AMC research strength.

Australian and New Zealand students will generally be provided with a Research Training Scheme (RTS) place providing an exemption from domestic student fees for up to two years full time (four years part time) for a Master of Philosophy, or four years full time (eight years part time) for a Doctor of Philosophy.
