Defence Materiel Organisation Award 2009 (Business)

The Defence Materiel Organisation will offer two awards in 2009 valued at $1500 each. This competitive award is available to students commencing year 2 in 2009 in the degree of:

  • Bachelor of Business (Maritime and Logistics Management)

Introducing the DMO

From fighter planes and satellites to tents and rations, the Defence Materiel Organisation (DMO) is Australia's largest engineering, project management and procurement organisation whose mission is to acquire and sustain equipment for the Australian Defence Force. The DMO's vision is to become the leading program management and engineering services organisation in Australia. The organisation has $9.6 billion to spend on Defence equipment in the current financial year.

The DMO is a civilian public service agency working within the Department of Defence. It is not a military organisation. It is an exciting place to work and offers outstanding career opportunities for logisticians at a variety of locations throughout Australia and overseas. DMO has a commercial work environment and partnership with Defence industry to deliver on capability. Benefit

The two awards will provide a cash benefit of $1500, paid to each candidate. Applicants will also be encouraged to apply for the Materiel Cadetship Scheme.

Eligibility

  • an Australian citizen
  • a full-time student
  • commencing year 2 in 2009 of a Bachelor of Maritime and Logistics Management degree at AMC
  • not in receipt of any other award

Selection Criteria

1. Career and Study Aspirations

a. Why did you choose Maritime & Logistics Management?
b. What have been your achievements during your first year at AMC?
c. How do you believe undertaking an AMC Maritime & Logistics Management degree will assist you when you enter the workforce?
d. What are your aspirations once you complete your Maritime & Logistics Management course?

2. Personal Skills

a. Provide examples of where you have demonstrated your ability to communicate effectively.
b. How have you demonstrated your skills in goal-setting and planning (especially for career and/or further study)
c. Detail leadership skills you possess and when you have had an opportunity to demonstrate them.
d. Provide examples of your level of self-reliance and effective team participation.

(N.B. You may wish to include examples of how you demonstrate these qualities in the workplace, at uni or in the community.)

3. Achievements in other pursuits

Please outline:

a. Your achievements in areas other than study and work (NB - these may be personal achievements e.g. assisting family)
b. Your involvement in any community activities.
c. Your involvement in university activities.

The Application should include:

  • a copy of your academic transcript;
  • a brief statement addressing the selection criteria (no more than two pages). There are three criteria, each with a list of related topics outlined for your reference. Applicants should frame their applications by addressing the core selection criteria demonstrating their abilities using relevant examples, while also taking into consideration the related topics. These related topics are indicative of the selection criteria and it is not intended that the claims should address each and every related topic.
  • a curriculum vitae, including any community leadership or service activities in which you have participated; and
  • a confidential reference from an academic mentor.
