I ran away to sea in 1970 at age 17. After 16 years’ service as a deck officer in commercial ships, the anchor was swallowed. Knowing nothing but ships but being reluctant to continue sailing on them, I decided to advise other people how to do it and offered my expertise to industry as a private, general marine surveyor and consultant.  After considerable success during fifteen years in that field, an advisory position with the Australian Government was accepted and I advised Australian Quarantine about matters maritime for the seven years to 2008.

In 2008, after most of forty years playing with ships - first as a sailor and then as an advisor, I entered what is probably the last role of my career as a lecturer at the Australian Maritime College.

They say: "Them what can, do. Them what can’t, teach."

It is now my privilege to offer the results of my experience in the shipping industry to those seeking to improve their own skills and demonstrate their competency in the disciplines required for the efficient management of safe ships in clean oceans.
