Special Consideration

Deferred Examinations

An application to defer sitting an examination must be submitted within three working days of the examination, unless there are extenuating circumstances. An application to defer an examination will only be accepted within the examination period for unforeseen circumstances such as sudden illness.

Applications are to be submitted on the Application to Defer Examination form available online and from Student Services. The completed form must be lodged with the Academic Coordinator.

If an application to defer an examination is based on medical reasons, the second page of the Application to Defer Examination form must be completed by a Medical Practitioner. If the application is based on other reasons, a statutory declaration must be attached, detailing the reasons preventing the student from sitting the exam within the examination period. Other corroborative evidence should also be attached.

The Academic Coordinator will take the application to the Course Coordinator for consideration, and will advise the applicant of the outcome in writing.

The Examination Committee will advise the applicant of the outcome in writing within twenty one (21) days of the application being received unless further enquiries need to be made.

Where possible, deferred examinations will be held within the supplementary examination period.

The sitting of a deferred examination may delay graduation until the next Council sitting and graduation period.

Note: Access to a Deferred Examination is a privilege not a right.
Submitting an application does not automatically mean that a student will be granted a deferred examination.

Other Requests for Special Consideration

Special requirements when sitting an examination - Students requiring additional time to sit an examination due to injury or disability, or other special requirements, should complete the following document Application for Examination Assistance and then contact the Academic Coordinator or Student Support staff FOUR WEEKS prior to the first day of the formal examination period. Original or certified copies of supporting documentary evidence will be required before and application is considered. A new application will be required to be submitted each Semester (Supporting documents will be held on file for previous applicants).

The Academic Co-ordinator will forward the documents for written approval from the Director of the Faculty or Course Coordinator.

Use of bilingual dictionaries - Applications for bilingual dictionaries should be presented to the Academic Coordinator for approval 10 working days prior to the commencement of the examination period. Applications will only be approved if English is not the student's first language as identified at the time of initial enrolment. If the application is approved, the student must provide the bilingual dictionary to the Academic Coordinator for inspection 45 minutes prior to the commencement of the examination. The bilingual dictionary must not contain any notations to be approved for use. The Academic Coordinator will provide a "stamped" authorization giving students permission to use a bilingual dictionary in the examination. Students must provide this "stamped" authorization at the examination venue, at which time the Invigilator will provide the student with the bilingual dictionary.

Illness whilst an examination is in progress - In the event of illness during an examination preventing the student from completing the examination, the student must notify the Invigilator at the time and submit evidence to the Academic Coordinator within three (3) working days on the Application to Defer Examination form. A Medical Practitioner must complete the second page of the form. The Academic Coordinator will liaise with the Course Coordinator once all required forms and evidence are submitted. If a student completes the examination, no consideration will be given for unreported illness.

Inability to sit exam at AMC during examination period - If students are aware they will be unable to attend AMC during the examination period prior to commencement of the examinations (eg due to scheduled surgery), they must apply for special consideration to sit an examination at another time using the Application to Defer Examination form.

Requests by internal students to sit examinations external to AMC - Internal students may make requests in writing to the Academic Coordinator, to sit examinations at locations external to AMC. Such requests will only be considered in extenuating circumstances, and must be accompanied by corroborative evidence. The Academic Coordinator will liaise with the Course Coordinator once all required forms and evidence are submitted. AMC will make the final decision with regard to the selection of the external examination venue. Any costs incurred (eg venue hire or Invigilator wages) must be met by the student.
