The Australian Maritime College has been nominated for the Defence Connect Australian Defence Industry Awards.

AMC is one of four finalists to be nominated as  the Academic Institution of the Year  in the Defence Connect Australian Defence Industry Awards for 2019.

In addition AMC’s training and consultancy division AMC Search has been nominated as one of nine finalists in the Small and Medium Enterprise of the Year-Regional.

Defence Connect is a leading online industry publication.

Other nominations in the Institution of the Year are Flinders University, Adelaide University and Wodonga TAFE.

AMC Principal Michael van Balen AO said:"It is with a great sense of pride that I can inform you that AMC and AMC Search have been publicly acknowledged through selection as Defence Industry Awards finalists."

"This is a strong reflection of the hard work and dedication of staff and of the high quality of graduates, research and consultancy outputs produced by our national institution," Mr van Balen said.

"Winners will be announced on 26 September, however I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all finalists in their respective categories, who, along with AMC and AMC Search, have achieved much over the past year.”

Defence Connect director Phillip Tarrant said the awards existed to honour and recognise the outstanding achievements made by both individuals and firms working in the Australian defence industry.

“The defence industry has got right behind the awards with 240 finalists shortlisted from over 600 submissions representing more than 150 companies,” Mr Tarrant said.

“This is an extraordinary vote of confidence for Australia’s defence industry and representative of the extraordinary depth of talent we have in the sector.

The nomination comes after AMC courses were recently endorsed by the Naval Shipbuilding College which is tasked with ensuring a skilled workforce for the $90 billion Naval Shipbuilding Enterprise. AMC has received a $30 million commitment from the Australian Government for phase one of a Maritime Defence Innovation and Design Precinct at the Newnham campus.

In 2018 AMC established a Study Centre at the Australian National Maritime Museum at Darling Harbour in Sydney with the aim of strengthening ties with surrounding ports, shipping, logistics, engineering and defence industries.

AMC has a longstanding partnership with the Defence Science and Technology Group’s Platforms Performance Branch which has facilitated the development of the Towing Tank, Model Test Basin, Cavitation Tunnel and an Underwater Collision Research Laboratory at Newnham.    

The facilities, regarded as the best in the Southern Hemisphere, are used for the testing of models of future RAN ships, submarines, watercraft and port infrastructure.

Other nominations in the Regional SME of the Year are Bendpro, Craig International ballistics, J3Seven, Meggitt Training Systems, JFD Australia, Pacific Gauge, Rowlands Metalworks, Virtual Simulation  Systems.
